Dr. Franklin Vander Meulen

Director and Associate Professor of Intercultural Studies

Dr. Franklin A. VanderMeulen serves as Director and Associate Professor of Intercultural Studies at Heritage College & Seminary. His teaching focuses on helping students understand God’s global mission and preparing them for faithful cross-cultural gospel ministry in a wide range of contexts.

Through his teaching, leadership, and ministry partnerships, Dr. VanderMeulen seeks to encourage students to see how their lives and ministries fit within the Lord’s eternal mission, to equip them for intercultural service, and to strengthen Heritage’s work alongside churches and mission agencies.

Ministry Experience

Dr. Vander Meulen has served in cross-cultural ministry, church leadership, and theological education in a variety of contexts, including:

  • Served for two years in Panama teaching missionary children, where the Lord deepened his heart for cross-cultural evangelism, discipleship, and church planting among unreached people groups
  • Completed two additional years of transition and missionary training
  • Served for 15 years in administration and leadership at Ethnos Canada’s head office
  • Travelled to encourage field leaders and Canadian missionaries in five countries on three continents, as well as Nunavut, in exploring ministry opportunities
  • Served in significant leadership and preaching/teaching roles in two local churches during his years with Ethnos
  • Has been involved in his local church in Cambridge for approximately 10 years
  • Serves on his local church missions committee
  • Serves one evening each week in a ministry to marginalized people

Across more than three decades of ministry, Dr. Vander Meulen has served in mission agency work, local church ministry, and classroom teaching, with a strong commitment to knowing students by name, engaging them personally, and connecting classroom learning with the Church’s global mission.

Academic Awards

  • Selected for student testimony at Tyndale University graduation (1992)
  • Two-time Pittaway Award for Non-Graduating Academic Proficiency – Awarded to the non-graduating student who was enrolled full-time and who had the highest AGPA for the current school year (2012, 2013)
  • Graduated M.Div, summa cum laude
  • Graduating Academic Proficiency Award – Awarded to the graduating student who had the highest AGPA for the current school year (2014)
  • Two-time Harold Stainton Hebrew Award – Awarded to a student who has done outstanding work in the area of Hebrew language studies (2013, 2014)
  • Jack Scott Award – Awarded to the most outstanding student graduating from a degree program who demonstrates, in the most outstanding way, a balance among academic achievement, ministry involvement, and Christian character (M.Div. graduation, 2014)
